Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education -These courses are designed to improve reading and math skills.  The class is self-paced and instructors are available at all times to provide assistance to the students. Many teaching methods including audio cassettes, video cassettes, and computer software are used.

Monday - Thursday: 8:30 am - 12:00 pm      Tuesday and Thursday:  5:00pm - 8:00 pm

Cost: $60.00 day/ $30.00 night per semester

GED Class

GED Class—This course prepares you for the South Carolina General Equivalency Diploma Examination.  The course is offered at Poynor Adult and Community Education Center for adults 19 years of age and older who are no longer in regular school. The class offers instruction in math, science, social studies, reading, and writing. Instructional methods include self-paced study sheets, computer software, classroom lectures, videos and practice tests.  
Monday - Thursday: 8:30 am - 12:00 noon

Tuesday and Thursday 5:00pm - 8:00 pm


$60.00 day/$30.00 night per semester

High School Diploma

High School Diploma - Classes for students 19 and older are offered each semester during the school year.  Take advantage of our specially designed, self-paced courses which include English, Math, Science, Social Studies and various electives.  Instructors are available to assist students at all times.  Students must earn 24 units and pass the HSAP to receive their diploma.

Work Keys/Career Readiness Certification

WorkKeys and the Career Readiness Certification Program
The WorkKeys test, developed by American College Testing Inc., is a skill measurement standard for determining performance in various job skill areas.  Adult Education offers testing and test preparation in the three areas required by most employers:   Reading for Information,  Applied Mathematics, Locating Information
If you are not at the skill level that matches your employment goals, the Career Readiness Certification process offers skill enhancement paired to the WorkKeys system using a combination of classroom instruction and the WIN software program. Using diagnostic tools within the system, the instructor will advise participants when they have reached an appropriate level of preparation for their WorkKeys target goal.
Workkeys for Parapro testing: $50.00 test fee

GED Fast Track

Free GED Fast Track
Twelve hour classes will be offered in the daytime and the evening for qualified students. Students will receive instruction in  writing essays and using the Casio Fx calculator. General information is given concerning the test.

A practice GED test is given at the end of the class. Tests are scored, and students are given information which allows them to decide if they are ready for the GED test or if they need additional preparation. Call 843-664-8152 for information.

English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language -  (ESL/ Ingles Como Idioma Segundo/Anglais Comme Lanque Secondaire) - This class is for non-English speaking adults who need instruction in speaking and writing English.                                    

 Monday - Thursday:: 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
Tuesday and Thursday: 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm
Cost: $60.00 per semester/day         $30.00 per semester/night

Young Adult Program

YAP! (Young Adult Program)

A student aged 17 or 18, not currently attending high school, may enroll in Poynor to pursue a high school diploma or GED. The student should pick up a registration packet of information.  After eligibility is determined and the student is accepted into the program, the student may enroll at a designated time. Qualified teachers are available to provide assistance.  All courses are self-paced, and labs are equipped with computers and a variety of software to assist each student. Students must earn 24 units and pass the HSAP in order to receive a diploma.  

$60.00 per unit/ $60.00 GED per semester    Monday - Thursday 1:00pm-4:30pm    

 

Moms' Program

Moms’ Program

 In this parent enhancement program for teenage mothers, students may earn their GED. Children from birth through 4 years of age may attend our on-site day care center while mothers are in school. Special parenting classes are a part of this program. This course is taught at the R.N. Beck Learning Center.  Call  673-5793 for more information.
